Lanka is a Bolywood drama directed by Maqbool Khan. The movie is set in current day Mumbai, but the story is a modern refashioning of the ancient Sanskrit epic tale Ramayana, which is an important tale in the Hindu culture and one of the two great epics of India. The main character is a girl named Anju, played by Tia Bajpai. Although Anju is a resident doctor in Mumbai, she is very unhappy with her life. For unexplained reasons, she has become the unwilling mistress of a powerful murderer, who gets drunk nearly every night and comes to her house to rape her. Anju is so unhappy that one night she tries to kill herself, but her father stops her. The man causing her pain is named Jaswant Sisodia, played by Manoj Bajpayee, who is the don of a small Indian town called Bijnor. Being don means he has influence over the police and politicians in the town and can basically do what he wants within that land. Sisodia exploits this liberty one night when he is sent by his friend Chote to settle a property near the town. The villagers of the town don’t want Sisodia to take their land, so they beat him up. Sisodia takes revenge the next day by killing seven people in the village. When Sisodia returns to town, Chote slaps Sisodia but refrains from telling the court out of loyalty. While Sisodia was away, Chote fell in love with Anju. Sisodia discovers this and goes to confront Chote, but while they are arguing, an assassin sent by the villagers and the police attempts to shoot Sisodia mistakenly shoots Chote instead. Because Chote took a bullet for him, Sisodia forgives Chote for loving his mistress and takes him to the hospital where Anju works. There Anju falls in love with Chote. The plot twists back and forth many more times with more innocent lives lost until the story reaches a satisfying and just conclusion.
