This movie was taken from the book of the same name and made in 2004. The story's setting is in Vienna. The story starts out with a teenage girl who has an interest in a new neighbor in her apartment complex who plays the piano. He plays professionally and she is obsessed with listening and watching him play even though he takes no notice of her at all. Later, her mother remarries and she has to move, which she does not want to do until she sees the pianist bring home a woman to his apartment which upsets her greatly. She then leaves to live with her mother and new stepfather. She grows up but never forgets the pianist. She gets a job in Vienna as a model and moves back to Vienna hoping to be able to connect with the pianist. They eventually cross, sleep together, he says he will call her as he leaves to go on tour, but never calls. She ends up having their child, but she never tells him because she doesn't want to have to need him for anything. She ends up marrying an older man whom she tells of the pianist and has named her son for. She ends up seeing the pianist at the opera and they cross again as she is leaving. He does not know it is her, but is attracted to her which angers her husband when he picks her up. Later, her son dies from a disease and she ends up ill in the hospital as well. There she writes him a letter about how she feels about him, their son, and about her life and what has happened. She dies and the hospital staff sends her letter and tells him of her death. He now remembers her and ends up in a duel with her husband.
