Lisztomania is about the wild life of composer/piano virtuoso Franz Liszt. His Romantic composing has phallic imagery and most of this movie is dedicated to Liszt's so-called friendship with Richard Wagner, a fellow composer. The film starts out when Liszt gave a piano performance to a multitude of screaming teenage fans at the same time he is trying to maintain multiple affairs with his many mistresses. When he is invited by Princess Carolyne of St. Petersburg and elopes, he becomes an abbe when the Pope has forbidden the marriage.
