The movie chronicles the life of Jane Marks, Michelle and Elizabeth, Jane's adult daughters, and her African-American adopted daughter Annie; each of them have their own personal issues which affect their lives. Elizabeth, who's an aspiring actress, questions the rejection she receives of a movie role, based on her looks. She seeks comfort from a well known film heartthrob. Michelle takes a job in a photo lab, and much to the dismay of her husband Bill, falls for the attention of her co-worker Jordan. Overweight Annie seeks to fit in with her white family, while Jane, to make herself more physically appealing, tries liposuction, and almost dies in the result. This movie is all about how physical appearance can alter and change people's perception of how they really are.
