Lowdown Dirty Criminals is a 2020 New Zealand crime-comedy film directed by Paul Murphy. The movie tells the story of a group of friends - Freddy (played by Samuel Austin), Reg (played by Francis Biggs), and Tyrone (played by Unaloto Funaki) - who are desperate for cash and decide to rob a local crime lord. At the beginning of the movie, we’re introduced to Freddy, who is a stock clerk in a local supermarket. He’s been struggling with money and has recently broken up with his girlfriend. One day, he bumps into his old friend Reg and his girlfriend Sue, who are talking about their recent success in robbing a store. Reg and Sue convince Freddy to join them in a bigger heist that’ll make them all rich.

The trio decides to rob a local crime lord known as The Upholsterer, who runs a furniture business as a front for his illegal activities. They plan the heist by breaking into his mansion and stealing a valuable painting. However, things get complicated when they discover the painting is already stolen and find themselves in possession of something far more valuable than they ever imagined.

Lowdown Dirty Criminals takes a step back from your typical crime film and focuses on a lighthearted and comedic atmosphere. The movie has a unique tone and style that makes it feel like it’s leading with its chin, and in doing so, it manages to stand out from the crowd of similar movies.

The outstanding performance from the cast is what makes Lowdown Dirty Criminals so engaging throughout. Samuel Austin as Freddy brings a lot of heart to his role, and his character’s arc is thoroughly enjoyable. Francis Biggs as Reg is an affable goofball, while Unaloto Funaki as Tyrone is a hilarious scene-stealer. The chemistry between these three actors is a big reason why the movie works so well.

Another highlight of the movie is the supporting cast. The Upholsterer is played by Robbie Magasiva, who is known for his role in the hugely popular New Zealand drama, Shortland Street. He is menacing and intimidating, but also incredibly charismatic, making him an intriguing villain. Rebecca Gibney plays the detective in charge of the case, and her performance is top-notch.

The film is shot beautifully, with picturesque New Zealand scenery playing an integral role. The cinematography is impressive, and the use of color and lighting is notable, adding to the film's tone and overall feel.

The script is well-written, with plenty of comedic moments and snappy dialogue. The movie's pacing is also on point, keeping the audience engaged and interested from start to finish. The humor in the film is never too over-the-top and hits the right notes, balancing humor with drama and action.

Lowdown Dirty Criminals is a movie that you will enjoy if you’re looking for a feel-good crime caper. It is a perfect movie to unwind and enjoy with friends or family.
