Clark Stevens is a psychiatric intern who comes for a training course at the Cunningham Hall mental facility before his college graduation. While there he becomes friends with the resident nurse Sara, and with an apparently unstable young patient who claims to not belong there. Things take a turn for the mysterious when Clark discovers that the hospital administrator, Dr. Franks, is using placebos rather than real medication to treat the patients and is obsessed with the supernatural. The further he digs into the way things are run, the more disturbing the revelations that he uncovers are.
