Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is a comedy film released in 2016, directed by Jake Szymanski and starred by Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, and Aubrey Plaza. The film follows two hard-partying brothers, Mike (Devine) and Dave (Efron), who are tasked by their family to bring suitable dates to their sister's wedding in Hawaii to prevent them from emotionally derailing the whole occasion.
The problem begins when Mike and Dave post a viral online ad, seeking "nice girls" who can join them to Hawaii for their sisterâs wedding. The post gets a lot of attention, and the brothers eventually find themselves with two seemingly mild-mannered women, Alice (Kendrick), and Tatiana (Plaza), who at first glance, appears to be what their family might prefer to see. However, the girls are not what they seem, and soon enough, the situation spirals out of control, leading to hilarious consequences.
Mike is a bartender, and Dave works as a gasoline truck driver, and both of them have a reputation for outrageous partying behavior. They have grown tired of showing up to their family events and causing chaos, so they have decided that they need to change, and finally, show their family that they can behave themselves as adults. However, the online ad they post attracts two women who are just as wild, if not more, than they are. Alice is a struggling waitress, and Tatiana is a barman and designer, both looking for a free holiday, but their crazy personalities and behavior are nothing like what was advertised.
Alice and Tatiana make a strategic effort to lie about themselves to get picked for the trip, and they do so successfully. Alice pretends to be a school teacher with a Ph.D., whilst Tatiana pretends to be an investment banker - their deception plan worked. However, when at the family wedding, both Alice and Tatiana revealed their true identities and wild nature which caused chaos and wrecked the wedding in a way that Mike and Dave's family never thought possible.
From drunken antics, working on improving their lives to attempting to control their wild, crazy dates, the duo gets dragged into all sorts, including fights, parties, and even drugs. Alice's innocent character fools everyone in the film into thinking that she is sweet and meek, but as the action progresses, it becomes clear that she also knows how to have fun.
The movie has many hilarious moments made possible by the exceptional acting of the cast, especially Kendrick and Plaza. The movieâs humor derives from the subversion of typical romantic comedy tropes, gender stereotypes, and its ability to make its characters act utterly ridiculous while still remaining relatable. The chemistry of the cast was amazing and contributed significantly to the success of the film. Efron and Devine played their parts to perfection, and when combined with the humor of Kendrick and the quirkiness of Plaza, the result was pure gold.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is fast-paced, packed full of jokes, and a generally great time, making it an excellent comedy film full of relatable and funny moments. It is a perfect guilty pleasure, and one of those rare comedy films that make audiences laugh out loud from start to finish. The film is a refreshing break from the usual romantic comedies and is highly recommended for those who are looking for a laugh-out-loud movie to watch.
