Royal Thompson owns an unproductive dairy farm in southern Texas, One day, Olaf Helton presents himself at the farm seeking employment and is hired on the spot. Helton proves to be an invaluable asset. A rude stranger named Homer T. Hatch shows up at the farm. revealing Helton is an escaped mental patient. Hatch confronts Helton and in an ensuing fight, Thompson kills Hatch to protect Helton.
