The main action of this western centers around Union Calvary officer Major Amos Dundee's efforts to recruit his own army after he is booted out of his command post for making an unspecified error in judgment for which he is demoted. His new assignment is in New Mexico as head of the prisoner of war camp located in that territory. When the Apaches go on the war path and murder a local rancher and his family, along with members of the military, Dundee has the perfect excuse to put his plan to recruit his own little private militia into action in order to pursue the Indian chief Charibba, who has fled across the border and deep into Mexico. Making Dundee's efforts all the more difficult is having to join forces with his former West Point rival, Captain Tyreen, both of whom compete for the attention of a beautiful widow from Germany. Dundee pursues an affair with her, but is ultimately wounded and pretends to head back toward the United States.
