Our Girl Friday is a 1953 adventure-comedy directed by Noel Langley and starring Joan Collins, Kenneth More, and George Cole. The film follows a group of survivors from a plane crash who end up stranded on a desert island, along with an unlikely companion - a spoiled, glamorous journalist named Ann Winters (Collins). The film starts off with Ann Winters being assigned to accompany a group of men on a trip to a remote Pacific island. The group includes a stuffy government official named Robert Cartwright (More), a crooked businessman named Jack Clayton (Cole), and a rugged pilot named Mike Taylor (George Cole). During the flight, the plane crashes into the ocean and the survivors end up stranded on an uninhabited island with no means of communication or transportation.
As they wait for rescue, the group must learn to work together and survive on the island's limited resources. Ann proves to be a difficult addition to the group, as she is more interested in taking photographs of herself and writing about her "adventure" than actually contributing to the group's well-being. However, as time goes on she begins to mature and become more reliant on the others.
Meanwhile, Jack Clayton has ulterior motives for being on the island and begins plotting a scheme to steal a valuable pearl from a nearby island. He enlists the help of two other crash survivors in his scheme, but the group ultimately decides to turn him in to Robert Cartwright, who is the only official authority figure on the island.
As the group continues to survive, they make various attempts to signal for help and eventually succeed in being rescued. Through their experiences on the island, they have all grown and learned valuable lessons about teamwork and survival.
Joan Collins delivers a standout performance as Ann Winters, a character who undergoes a significant transformation throughout the film. Collins imbues Ann with a bratty, self-centered demeanor at first, but gradually shows a softer, more vulnerable side as the character learns to adapt to her new environment.
Kenneth More provides a strong counterbalance to Collins as Robert Cartwright, a character who initially comes across as stiff and bureaucratic but gradually reveals more depth and compassion. George Cole adds a touch of humor as the wily pilot Mike Taylor, while Shelagh Fraser and Robertson Hare also provide noteworthy performances in supporting roles.
The film features gorgeous Technicolor cinematography, capturing the lush beauty of the Pacific islands, and composer Arthur Benjamin delivers a memorable score that adds to the film's sense of adventure and romance.
All in all, Our Girl Friday is an enjoyable adventure film that offers a mix of humor, drama, and heart. With strong performances, stunning visuals, and an engaging story, it is definitely worth checking out for fans of classic Hollywood cinema.
