Bobby Ogden is an ex-convict who has seen the light and hopes to get his life straight. He plans to get his career as a country western singer going. With high hopes, Bobby shows some of his tracks to Nashville music star Garland Dupree. Bobby is devastated when Garland Dupree uses one of Bobby's tunes, "Outlaw Blues," for himself and does not give Bobby any credit. When Bobby confronts Garland Dupree about the situation, Garland Dupree pulls a gun on Bobby but ends up shooting himself in the struggle. Instead of owning up to the accident Garland Dupree tells everyone Bobby shot him, sending Bobby on the run with only Tina Waters, Garland Dupree's recently fired back-up singer, believing Bobby was innocent. Together, the two flee while Bobby becomes an underground legend who is acknowledged as the man who actually wrote the hit while still being out on the police's most wanted list.
