Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry is a cult classic film about two small-time race car drivers, Larry and Deke, who rob a grocery store to purchase a new race car. They hold the grocery store manger’s wife and daughter hostage and demand $150,000 in cash. Larry and Deke hope that an expensive race car will help them win a few more races. If they win some more races, they would qualify for the professional NASCAR circuit. The robbery does not go according to plan when a woman named Mary who Larry had a one night stand with wants to come along for the ride. The threesome takes the police, a helicopter and an obsessed Sherriff on a wild chase in a stolen 1969 Dodge Charger. The police hunt the Charger throughout the movie, but their cars are not fast enough to keep up with the super fast Dodge Charger. Even though, they are able to elude the police and outrun them, the trio does not fair very well in the end. They reach the border and believe they have outsmarted the police when they crash into a freight train. The movie stars Peter Fonda as Larry, Susan George as Mary Coombs and Adam Roarke as Deke. Vic Morrow stars as the Captain Franklin who is determined to catch the trio. Rodney McDowell plays the grocery store manager, but he is not credited. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry is lots of fun to watch and has plenty of fast-paced action. John Hough directed the movie. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry is an entertaining low-budget film that was filmed mostly in Stockton, California. It only cost about one million dollars to produce, but it was a big hit at the box office and grossed over twenty-eight million dollars. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox on May 17, 1974 and was mostly shown in drive-in theaters. The film is still a popular today and probably will be for years to come.
