This 1999 American film is based on John Irving's novel of the same name. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, and Michael Caine won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Homer Wells is an orphan who spent most of his childhood at a rural Maine orphanage. Dr. Wilbur Larch has passed much of his medical training on to Homer, who assisted Dr. Larch with medical care for children of unwed mothers and abandoned children. Dr. Larch also performs illegal abortions, which Homer refuses to assist with for moral reasons. Wally Worthington, a World War II pilot, brings his girlfriend to the orphanage for an abortion. Wanting to see the world, Homer leaves the orphanage with Wally and the girlfriend. They get as far as an apple orchard and cider mill that Wally's family runs. Wally goes off to war, and Homer and Wally's girlfriend fall in love.
