The Journey of August King is a drama film that was released in 1996. The film involves a poor widower farmer who comes across a runaway slave while returning from selling his crops at market. The farmer is quickly confronted with the moral question of should he break the local laws helping the young female slave to find her way to freedom, or if he should allow her to go on her own. This latter course of action will almost certainly result in either the death or capture of the slave. The film then shifts to ask the question of whether either character is in fact free, and if there is any chance of them being able to ever gain their freedom. The Journey of August King was written by John Duigan. It is based on a novel that was both written and adapted into a screenplay by John Ehle. The Journey of August King features performances by Jason Patric and Thandie Newton.
