Adam is a reporter from Rolling Stone magazine who is sent into Los Angeles to write an article on a businessman who was charged and arrested for an illegal drug deal. While Adam is writing this article, he also takes it upon himself to write another story focusing on the topic of fitness clubs and how he thinks that they're pretty much the single bars of the 1980s. Adam decides to visit a popular gym in Los Angeles known as "The Sport Connection." He tries to ask the workout instructor, Jessie, for an interview, but she turns him down due to all of the bad press she received when she was a competitive swimmer in her past life. Adam takes it to the next level by joining the fitness club to get an inside scoop on what's really going on in the inside. He later tries to get to know some of the other club members as they tell him about their love and commitment to the gym, but there are a few people that are not willing to open up to him. Even though Jessie doesn't have an interest to be a part of Adam's story, she does develop some romantic feelings for him as time goes by. As this happens, Adam loses his focus on this story altogether. Jessie begins to trust him, and Adam shows her that he isn't like every other journalist who is out for the thrill of covering a scoop for money. Adam decides to write an honest review on how these fitness clubs make for the perfect meeting scene for singles in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, Adam's article is handed over to the other authors for editing and proofreading. Jessie finds an article in the magazine discussing her unattractive past with private details about her past romance. Adam hears about Jessie's story being leaked to the public, but as soon as he finds out about this, it's too late. Jessie is enraged and embarrassed about being described as an overused piece of equipment.
