Pure Luck is a slapstick comedy featuring Martin Short and Danny Glover. When the daughter of a prominent socialite is missing for weeks on end, a detective is called to help find her. Valerie Highsmith is a wealthy, well-known heiress to an enormous fortune and she has terrible luck. She disappears one day after falling off a cruise ship in Mexico and suffers a tremendous bout of amnesia. Then, Valerie is kidnapped by a group of dangerous gangsters. The kidnappers are asking for a hefty ransom from her father, who has vast wealth and limitless resources. When he fails to respond to their demands, they take Valerie to an unknown location. After weeks of frustration and multiple failed rescue attempts, he asks Ray Campanella, a detective played by Danny Glover, to approach the case with a new angle. While preparing to embark on an international search for Valerie, Ray meets Eugene Proctor, an accountant played by Martin Short, whose unbelievably bad luck inspires him. Upon meeting Eugene, Ray decides to test Eugene's bad luck. He invites Eugene into a large boardroom filled with chairs. Only one has a wobbly, broken leg. Eugene, who is the most accident-prone person Ray has ever met, is intrinsically drawn to the broken chair, sits down, and immediately falls. Ray then begins to wonder if Eugene's horrible luck might help them find Valerie. After Ray meets with a psychologist who theorizes that Eugene's bad luck will attract Valerie, which he calls "coincidence misfortune theory," the two embark on a trick to Mexico, where Valerie was last scene. Using Eugene as a bad luck magnet, Ray begins a wild goose chase. Eugene's luck is so atrocious, the two get into several very difficult situations before they even become close to finding Valerie. The wealthy man becomes desperate and offers Eugene twice the salary for finding Valerie. Eventually, they find her and Eugene and Valerie find themselves mutually attracted to one another.
