Reef, The is an Australian survival thriller movie directed by Andrew Traucki, the same one who previously directed Open Water and Black Water. The movie was released in 2010 and stars Damian Walshe-Howling and Gyton Grantley. The movie is based on a true story which occurred in 1983, in which a group of fishermen got stranded on a reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
The plot follows four friends - Matt (Walshe-Howling), Luke (Grantley), Suzie (Adrienne Pickering) and Warren (Mark Simpson). They embark on a boating journey to an island in the Great Barrier Reef to celebrate Luke's birthday. Along the way, they spot a capsized sailboat and consider investigating but decide against it as they want to reach the island before sunset.
After setting up camp and indulging in a night of partying, the group decides to head back to the mainland the next day. However, while Matt and Suzie are diving, they realize that the boat has drifted away, leaving them stranded. They swim back to the island to search for their friends but soon come to the realization that they are completely alone, with no means of contacting the outside world.
With limited water and food supplies, the group must survive the harsh elements of the reef, including deadly marine life and dehydration. As days go by, tensions rise, and the group begins to turn on each other. Matt, as the most experienced diver, takes on the responsibility of finding a way out, and his determination and resourcefulness are tested to the fullest.
The movie creates a sense of isolation and despair that is palpable, with the beautiful cinematography of the reef providing a stark contrast to the perilous situation that the protagonists find themselves in. The performances of Walshe-Howling and Grantley are particularly noteworthy, with their characters portraying the struggle of trying to remain calm and hopeful amidst such extreme circumstances.
Throughout the movie, Traucki uses natural sounds and a tense score to create a sense of foreboding, and the movie's climax is suitably harrowing, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. Without giving any spoilers, the movie's conclusion is both satisfying and true to the real-life incident on which the movie is based.
Reef, The is a tense, gripping and emotionally satisfying movie that will certainly appeal to fans of survival thrillers. It succeeds in immersing the audience in the struggle of the protagonists and delivers an authentic portrayal of a real-life incident that could happen to anyone. The final shots of the untouched and glowing beauty of the reef are a testament to the power of nature, and the movie delivers an important message about the respect that we owe to the environment.
