Roaring Currents is a 2014 South Korean historical action film directed by Kim Han-min. It is based on the true story of the Battle of Myeongnyang, which took place in 1597 during the Imjin War between Korea and Japan. The movie stars Choi Min-sik, Seung-ryong Ryu, and Cho Jin-woong in lead roles. The film begins with the Korean navy, led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin (played by Choi Min-sik), facing off against the Japanese navy in multiple battles. However, the Japanese manage to destroy most of the Korean navy's ships, leaving only 12 left. The Korean king orders Yi Sun-sin to retreat and join forces with the Chinese navy. But Yi Sun-sin decides to stay and fight the Japanese navy with the 12 remaining ships.

The Japanese navy, led by Admiral Todo, has 330 ships and is on its way to invade Joseon. Yi Sun-sin knows that he cannot defeat the Japanese navy head-on, so he comes up with a strategy based on the geography of the Myeongnyang Strait. He positions his ships in a narrow area where the currents are strong, making it difficult for the larger Japanese ships to maneuver. The Japanese, confident of their victory, are taken aback by Yi Sun-sin's strategy and begin to lose the battle.

Meanwhile, the Japanese commander, Kurushima Michifusa (played by Seung-ryong Ryu), sees an opportunity to attack Yi Sun-sin's flagship and attempts to board it. But Yi Sun-sin's trusted lieutenant, Jang Bo-go (played by Cho Jin-woong), holds off the Japanese forces and saves Yi Sun-sin's life. The battle continues to rage on, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Eventually, Yi Sun-sin and his 12 remaining ships emerge victorious, having destroyed almost all of the Japanese fleet.

The film is a thrilling portrayal of the Battle of Myeongnyang, and Choi Min-sik's performance as Yi Sun-sin is exceptional. He portrays the admiral as a fearless leader who will do anything to protect his country, even if it means risking his own life. Seung-ryong Ryu is also impressive as the Japanese commander, adding depth and complexity to his character. Cho Jin-woong's portrayal of Jang Bo-go as a loyal and brave subordinate is also noteworthy.

The movie's action scenes are breathtaking, with scenes of naval battles and sword fights. The cinematography and visual effects are top-notch, making the film feel like an epic war movie. The music score is also impressive, heightening the tension of the battle scenes.

In addition to being a thrilling action movie, Roaring Currents is also a tribute to Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his bravery in defending Korea against the invading Japanese forces. The film portrays him as a national hero, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in South Korea to this day. The movie also highlights the importance of tactics and strategy in warfare, and how they can make all the difference in the outcome of a battle.

Overall, Roaring Currents is a must-see for fans of historical action movies. It is a thrilling and engaging film that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end. The film's stellar performances, impressive visuals, and powerful story make it a true masterpiece of Korean cinema.
