Sea Fever is a 2019 British-Irish thriller film directed and written by Neasa Hardiman. The movie was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and then was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 24 April 2020. The story of the film revolves around a marine biology student, named Siobhán, who joins a crew of fishermen for her research work.

Siobhán, played by Hermione Corfield, is a young marine biology student who finds herself caught up in a situation that she never could have predicted. She is sent to join a fishing trawler for her research work, along with the crew of six. The Skipper, played by Dag Malmberg, is fierce and commanding, determined to do whatever it takes to bring in the catch. The rest of the crew includes Gerard (Jack Hickey), Johnny (Dougray Scott), Sudi (Elie Bouakaze), Ciara (Ardalan Esmaili), and Freya (Olwen Fouéré).

The crew sets out to the open sea where their boat becomes entangled in the middle of the deep dark waters, where there is no land and no way to call for help. They discover a strange organism that slowly infects the ship's systems and threatens the lives of the entire crew. Siobhán discovers the source of the problem and must try to convince everyone to follow her lead in order to save themselves.

The movie is visually stunning and, at times, quite terrifying as the crew begins to succumb to the unseen threat. Director Neasa Hardiman masterfully creates an atmosphere of claustrophobic dread, as the small, isolated crew struggles to deal with something that they don't fully understand. The film is well acted with Hermione Corfield's performance standing out as the most convincing. The character of Siobhán is complex and interesting, and Corfield brings a depth to her role that makes her the heart of the film.

The cinematography is one of the standout features of the movie, capturing the eerie beauty of the sea and the claustrophobia of the closed-in spaces that the crew must navigate. The use of practical effects, rather than relying on computer-generated imagery, elevates the film's realism, making the experience all the more visceral. The sound design is equally impressive, capturing the constant hum of the ship's engines and the creaking of the vessel's wooden planks as they strain against the deep ocean swells.

The storyline brings a lot to the plate, incorporating themes like superstition, science, and traditional beliefs. The film explores the idea of science versus tradition, with Siobhán representing the rational and scientific, while the Skipper and some of the other crew members represent the superstitious and traditional. The friction between these two worldviews is examined throughout the movie, and the resolution to their conflict is not what one would expect.

Overall, Sea Fever is a thought-provoking film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is engaging, the acting is excellent, and the visuals are stunning. The film succeeds in creating an atmosphere that is both intense and suspenseful, while also touching on deeper questions about our relationship with the natural world. It's not often that a thriller can be as thought-provoking as it is terrifying, but Sea Fever manages to pull it off. A must-watch for any fans of sci-fi, suspenseful thrillers, and movies that leave you questioning the implications of what you have just watched.

Sea Fever is a 2020 fantasy movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.8 and a MetaScore of 60.
