Martin Luther King, Jr. is among a group of civil rights leaders organizing a series of marches to Selma, Alabama in 1965. During the struggle over voting rights for African Americans, reflected as a determined woman tries to register to vote only to find herself disappointed again, King meets with influential leaders including President Johnson and Malcolm X.

The movement, while grabbing the attention of the public, is met with often violent resistance that includes a church bombing. Coretta, King's wife, deals with her own struggles, including caring for her children while being harassed by disgruntled citizens and government officials.
