Silver Horde is a 1930 American pre-Code adventure film directed by George Archainbaud and starring Evelyn Brent, Louis Wolheim, and Jean Arthur. The movie was based on a novel by Rex Beach. The story of Silver Horde revolves around Boyd Emerson (Wolheim), a tough fisherman in Alaska during the gold rush. He is constantly at odds with Russia Jim, a fellow fisherman. Jim steals Boyd’s fishing nets, leaving him with nothing. Suddenly, an opportunity arises to make money when a cannery run by Cherry Malotte (Brent) needs workers. Boyd, Russia Jim and a group of fishermen agree to help her, picking up a lucrative fishing contract on the way. On the voyage to the cannery, Boyd and Cherry start falling for each other. When they reach their destination, they find that someone has been sabotaging the fishing operations. Russia Jim is the prime suspect, but with the help of Cherry, Boyd discovers that the real culprit is a rival canning company, attempting to drive them out of business. The film is filled with action-packed scenes, including a thrilling fight between Boyd and Russia Jim, a typhoon, and a tense boat race near the end of the movie. Evelyn Brent is the standout performer in Silver Horde. She plays Cherry Malotte, a strong and independent woman who is not afraid to stand up for herself. Brent's character is an outcast in the small Alaskan community, due to rumors spread about her past, but she is more than capable of handling herself. She even owns her cannery, which is unusual for a woman in that time period. Brent's performance is one of the highlights of the movie, showcasing her ability to play strong, complex female characters. Jean Arthur, on the other hand, plays Boyd's love interest, Mildred Wayland, a woman from Seattle who is visiting Alaska. Arthur's character seems a bit out of place, coming across as sophisticated compared to the other characters. Though her role is not as significant as Brent's, Arthur manages to bring some humor to the film with her comedic timing. Louis Wolheim is impressive as the rugged Boyd Emerson.
