Snake in the Eagle's Shadow is a martial arts film about an orphan, Chien Fu, adopted by a kung fu dojo. Chien is mistreated by the dojo's janitor as well as the dojo's instructors. He eventually makes friends with an old beggar who offers him a roof and a bite to eat. This old beggar is secretly the final master of Snake Kung Fu. He's in hiding from the Eagle Claw clan, who viciously massacred the other Snake masters. Aware of Chien's abuse, the old master trains Chien in the style of the Snake. While the old man heads off to seek a better hiding spot. After being abused yet again, Chien seeks out the old man who willingly gives further instruction, so long as Chien refrains from calling him "sifu," as they are just friends. Secretly, this is a measure taken so that Chien does not become a target of the Eagle Claw clan. Chian trains constantly and soon is easily able to evade being injured by the school's teachers. Chien further gains some acclaim by defeating an invading Mantis school's master with his newly-gained Snake style. One of the onlookers happens to be the leader of the Eagle Claw clan, whom recognizes Chien's style and decides to shadow him. Chien greets the Eagle Claw leader, who asks Chien about the old man. The leader simply claims that he was an old colleague and is looking for any information about him. The master easily thwarts Chien's strikes, with Chien realizing he is outclassed by Eagle Claw style. This causes Chien to develop a new form by watching a cat defeat a cobra. Chien unknowingly directs the master right to his friend. In this duel of styles, Chien uses a "cat-snake style" to thwart the Eagle Claws. Triumphant, Chien would name the technique "Cat's Claw," but his friend suggests "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow."
