This movie is in the style of traditional Chinese kung fu movies. However it has a modern twist. The main character, Johnnie is the only child of a couple who is too busy working to raise their child and is raised by all his grandparents. Usually he forgoes going to Peking, China but this year his hero, Jackie Chan is shooting a movie there. So convinced that Jackie will take him as one of his disciples and train him in kung fu he heads for the set. With typical traditional Chinese concerns, his grandparents show that they hope Johnnie will learn to respect others and to get the respect from others. Some of this is by attaining a balance in good grades and reaching an understanding for his Chinese heritage. In the traditional way, there are many kung fu fighting scenes while getting lost and held hostage in China. He comes in contact with real world applications of kung fu fighting with some dreamlike kung fu interpretations of everyday skirmishes. Throughout the movie we find recurring themes of his youthful status and that if Jackie Chan were to meet him, Jackie would not want him as one of his disciples. Meanwhile, his grandmother learns that her traditional ways of getting him to study are not reaching him and she goes to great lengths to contact Jackie Chan in person. She convinces him to help change the course of her grandson’s life because Johnnie reveres him so greatly. Indeed Jackie Chan meets Johnnie and tells Johnnie to go back to his grandparents and to study hard. Jackie promises to see him after he excels in school. By the end of the movie Johnnie has purpose and has achieved a more mature balance in life. Indeed Jackie comes through for him.
