Liam Neeson has played an array of characters in his long career, but perhaps none as unforgettable as retired CIA operative Bryan Mills in the action-thriller film Taken, which first hit cinemas in 2008. It's now considered a bit of a classic in the genre, and has spawned two sequels, as well as a TV series, that followed in its wake.

The story follows Bryan Mills, who has given up his career in espionage to be closer to his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), who lives with his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), in Los Angeles. Despite his good intentions, Bryan struggles to connect with his daughter and make up for lost time as she nears adulthood. When Kim convinces her father to let her travel to Europe with her friend Amanda, Bryan is understandably worried. However, his fears become a reality when the girls are kidnapped by a human trafficking ring, leaving Bryan with just 96 hours to find them and bring them home.

The unrated version of Taken offers a slightly different experience from the theatrical release. While the core of the story remains the same, there are some key differences in the way the action sequences and violence are portrayed. For instance, the fight scenes are more gruesome and visceral, and the death count is higher. This gives the film a grittier feel overall, which plays to its strengths as a thriller with a dash of horror. The extra bits of violence may not be for everyone, but they underscore the dangerous world that Bryan is trying to navigate. However, if you've seen the original release and enjoyed it, you may find them to be an interesting addition.

Apart from the added violence, what really makes Taken shine is Liam Neeson's performance. Bryan Mills is an iconic character for a reason, and it's largely due to Neeson's gravitas and screen presence. He's the perfect blend of intelligence, intensity, and vulnerability, which makes him both relatable and terrifying at the same time. He has a particular set of skills that he's happy to use to protect his daughter, and he's not afraid to resort to extreme measures to do so. He's a one-man army, taking on the bad guys with ruthless efficiency, and he's utterly compelling to watch.

Maggie Grace also does a great job as the victim-turned-heroine Kim. Despite being out of her depth, she manages to hold her own and tap into her father's training to try and escape her captors. Kim's initial naivete is believable without being annoying, and her evolution into a more proactive character is satisfying. Famke Janssen plays Lenore, Kim's mother and Bryan's ex-wife, who is not in the film as much. Her story mostly revolves around how she regrets her dissolved relationship with Bryan and wishes she had never remarried. The main plot takes precedence over this subplot, but it does inform a lot of the emotional beats of Bryan's character.

Overall, the unrated version of Taken is an excellent addition to the spy-thriller genre. It's a fast-paced, heart-stopping ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The violence may not be for everyone, but it's integral to the film's tone and atmosphere. Liam Neeson's performance is top-notch, and he delivers some of the most quotable lines in the film with conviction. If you're a fan of action movies, especially if you haven't seen Taken before, this unrated cut is definitely worth checking out.
