The Big Hangover is a 1950 romantic comedy-drama, directed by Norman Krasna and starring Van Johnson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Percy Waram. The film takes place in New York City, and revolves around David (Van Johnson), a returning war veteran who returns home after having too much to drink at his welcome home party. He wakes up the next morning with a wedding ring on his finger, next to a beautiful woman he doesn't recognize, and absolutely no memory of the previous night.

David has no recollection of the woman he married, and cannot find any proof of the marriage, not even in city hall. The woman, however, turns out to be his boss' daughter, and not only did they get married, but they also went on a romantic honeymoon trip to Mexico. David is confused and unsure of what to do, as he is still in love with his fiancé, Janie (Elizabeth Taylor). Meanwhile, David’s new father-in-law, Mr. Waterbury (Percy Waram), is having an affair with David’s old flame, nightclub singer Virginia (Josette Day), who he dumped before to marry his late wife.

The movie's plot progresses with David trying to figure out what happened on the night of his blackout, and trying to get an annulment. However, his new father-in-law is determined to keep their marriage intact, as he sees David as the perfect match for his daughter. The film has several comedic moments, such as when a private detective (Leon Ames) is hired to find out what happened during David's drunken night, and the lengths that the father-in-law goes to save the marriage.

The acting in the film is top-notch, with Van Johnson delivering a nuanced performance as a war veteran who is struggling with his mixed emotions about being back home, and adapting to civilian life. Elizabeth Taylor, on the other hand, embodies the ideal of a charming, beautiful and honest woman, who is ready to do anything for the man she loves. Percy Waram delivers a fantastic performance as Mr. Waterbury, the wily businessman and father-in-law, who is seen as one of the best characters in the film.

The Big Hangover was filmed in New York City, and the cinematography captures the old-school charm of the city in the 1950s. The streets, buildings, and cars all have that particular vintage feel, which gives the film a very unique look and ambience. The sets inside the clubs and restaurants are also designed to mimic the popular nightclubs of the time, with flashy lights, loud music, and lots of dancing.

One interesting aspect of The Big Hangover is the portrayal of the private detective. The character he plays is indicative of how detectives were portrayed in popular culture during that era. According to the film, the detective can find out anything about anyone, as long as they are willing to pay enough money. This is a clear reflection of the prominence of private detectives in popular culture at the time, and the romanticisation of their profession.

Overall, The Big Hangover is an entertaining romantic comedy-drama, that explores the themes of marriage, love, and family, and how they are affected by war. It is a snapshot of the idealisation of the 1950s in America, and provides a unique insight into the values and mores of the time. With top-notch acting, a lighthearted story, and beautiful cinematography, The Big Hangover is a must-see for fans of romantic comedies and vintage movies.
