The movie tells the story of a dog named Bill, who belongs to a young girl named Kathie Merrick, played by Elizabeth Taylor.
Bill, a collie, is a loyal companion to Kathie and follows her everywhere. But when Kathie's father enlists in the Army during World War II, the family must move to a new home near an Air Force base in Maine. Bill is left behind and ends up being sold to the Army as a war dog. Bill is trained to locate wounded soldiers on the battlefield and bring back help.

Lost and alone, Bill is rescued by a young French girl named Pat, played by Jan Clayton. Pat takes care of Bill and helps him find his way back to his unit.
Throughout his time in Europe, Bill shows incredible courage and loyalty to his fellow soldiers. He saves a group of soldiers from a minefield and helps locate wounded soldiers in dangerous situations. Bill's bravery earns him the nickname "Courage of Lassie," after the famous collie from earlier movies in the series.
Meanwhile, Kathie and her family are living near the Air Force base, and she misses Bill terribly. However, when she learns that Bill is serving in the war, she becomes proud of him and hopes that he can return home safe.
As the war nears its end, Bill is injured and must be sent back to the United States for medical treatment.
