Natty Gann is a 12-year-old tomboy in Depression-era Chicago. She loves her dad dearly, so when he moves to Washington State to find work in the timber industry, it isn't long before she runs away from her foster home to follow him. She has two traveling companions for much of her journey: a wolf that she rescues from an abusive situation and a hobo a few years older than her who takes her under his wing. Together, they face many harrowing situations, but she never gives up hope that she will be able to reunite with her father in Washington.
