The last time he saw Paris, Charles's life had spun out of control. The movie takes place mostly in flashback as Charles recounts his past to a sympathetic bartender. During the giddy celebrations of V-E Day he had met the carefree Helen and later her more responsible sister Marion. He and Helen married, had a daughter, and indulged too much in the post-war Parisian parties. The marriage falters when they can’t agree on what kind of life they want. Her family and affairs on both sides pull them further apart. Now, Charles has returned to reclaim what he left behind.
