The movie The Christmas Bunny focuses on a young girl named Julia. She is sent to her third foster home within her first six month period. Her real mother is a chronic drug addict whose only bond exists in an old VHS tape of the classic cartoon, The Velveteen Rabbit. Julie has watched this movie so many times that she literally becomes obsessed with it. As time goes by, Julia is then taken to the Cooper family who is constantly struggling to survive the day to day hustle and bustle of life. After they go to a Christmas dinner, Billy, one of the son's of the Coopers gets a BB gun as a Christmas gift. Billy decides to take the gun for a spin by shooting his gun around the neighbor. In doing so, he accidentally shoots a nearby rabbit in the leg. As soon as this happens, Julia begins to form a close bond with the rabbit and decides to name it Rumple. Later on, she discovers that the rabbit can talk, which only makes their bonds grow even stronger. Julia then takes Rumple to an intriguing and characteristic bunny lady named Betsey Ross. This woman teaches Julia how to take care of the rabbits, making it her responsibility. As the Coopers' see their foster daughter take on this new role of care taking for the rabbit, they learn how to rely on Gods faith and trust in themselves that they will one day live a life of serenity, in hopes that their luck will finally improve. Julia also learns to trust in her new foster family. They all must learn to work together in hopes that their life will finally turn around for them while having faith in each other with the help of their combined love and faith with the help of the charismatic bunny lady, Betsey.
