The story of a group of roughneck workers building a skyscraper and how their dangerous job affects their lives in and around the close friendships they form. Tom is a young man who is struggling to survive by riding boxcars in search of work and a home, after being beaten he is found and helped by construction workers Casey and Joss. After returning to health Tom must overcome his fear of heights and take up a job on the skyscraper construction team as the love of a dancer threatens the friendship the three men have built.
