When naive NYU film student Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick) is ripped off by conman Victor Ray (Bruno Kirby), his uncle, Carmine "Jimmy the Toucan" Sabatini (Marlon Brando), makes it up to him by offering him a job running errands. In a running gag, Carmine, who claims to be an "importer," looks and talks like Vito Corleone, though no one is brave enough to say it to his face. Carmine sends Clark to JFK airport to pick up a package that turns out to be a Komodo dragon with an upset stomach.

Clark eventually learns that Carmine runs an exotic "gourmet club," which charges unethical foodies $1 million for the privilege of eating the last members of endangered species. Clark struggles to find a way to save the Komodo dragon and get the girl (Penelope Ann Miller), who also happens to be Carmine's daughter, without ending up in the bottom of the Hudson River.
