Deep in the jungles of India, the black panther Bagheera hears the small faint cries of a human baby. When he goes to investigate he finds the orphaned child within a basket. He takes the baby to a mother wolf who had recently delivered some pups. She takes the baby in and names him Mowgli. Soon the young man cub as the animals refer to him, begins to learn the ways of the jungle. One night the wolf tribe learn that the Bengal Tiger Shere Khan had made his way back into the jungle which is bad news for young Mowgli. Shere Khan has been know to eat the flesh of men and so the animals decide Mowgli must be returned to the man village. Bagheera volunteers to escort the boy who openly objects to going. Mowgli tries everything within his power to stall Bagheera from taking him back to the man village. His first attempt is joining the Elephant Brigade and when Bagheera finds him they fight. Bagheera, now fed up with Mowgli's behavior, leaves him on his own. Mowgli meets up with a sloth bear named Baloo who offers to take him in and raise him as his own and that he would never return him to the man village if he did not want to. Baloo then goes into teaching Mowgli how to live a care free life in the jungle. Soon, Mowgli is kidnapped by an orangutang who calls himself King Louie. He wants to know how to make fire like man but Mowgli was not raised by men and does not know how. Baloo and Bagheera team up to rescue Mowgli from King Louie and his monkey friends. Bagheera then explains to Baloo that Shere Khan is back and it is too dangerous for the boy to live in the jungle any longer. Baloo tries to explain to Mowgli how dangerous it is for him to stay in the jungle. Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera all end up encountering Shere Khan but due to lighting starting a fire he is scared away. Mowgli reluctantly goes with Baloo and Bagheera to the edge of the jungle where the man village is and changes his mind about living there when he finds a pretty village girl.
