The New Guy is a 2002 comedy film that tells the story of Dizzy Gillespie Harrison, a high school student who is constantly picked on and bullied due to his eccentric persona and lack of social skills. The movie stars DJ Qualls as Dizzy, Lyle Lovett as Bear Harrison, Dizzy's father, and Eliza Dushku as Danielle, Dizzy's love interest.
The movie begins with Dizzy getting humiliated in front of the entire school when he accidentally knocks down the school's basketball team during a pep rally. After being expelled from his school, Dizzy decides to reinvent himself as a cool guy to give himself a fresh start. He collects advice from an ex-convict named Luther, played by Eddie Griffin, who teaches him how to act and dress like a criminal. Dizzy even goes to prison and gets a real tattoo so that he can look tough.
Dizzy's new persona is a hit, and he transfers to a new school as a "cool guy" called Gil Harris. Gil manages to make new friends and even gets the attention of the popular girl, Danielle. However, as Dizzy's popularity increases, he starts to lose sight of who he really is and his past catches up with him when his former schoolmates come to his new school and expose his true identity.
The rest of the movie is about Dizzy trying to balance his newfound popularity with his true self while also trying to win back the heart of Danielle. Of course, comedic hijinks ensue, including a hilarious dance-off scene between Dizzy and his former school bully, played by Horatio Sanz.
Overall, The New Guy is a fun and lighthearted comedy that will make you laugh out loud. It's a movie about being true to yourself and not changing who you are just to fit in. DJ Qualls gives a fantastic performance as Dizzy, and the supporting cast, including Eliza Dushku and Lyle Lovett, are all excellent as well. If you're looking for a feel-good comedy that will put a smile on your face, then The New Guy is definitely worth checking out.
