Belgian-born martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme’s “Quest” is a 1996 action-adventure and martial arts film that’s set in the 1920s. "The Quest" is Van Damme's directorial debut, and he helped write the script along with Frank Dux, Steven Klein, Paul Mones, and frequent collaborator Sheldon Lettich. Van Damme stars alongside Roger Moore, Janet Gunn, and James Remar as Westerners who travel to the Lost City of Tibet for a tournament in which the world’s greatest fighters vie for the Golden Dragon, a valuable statue. Van Damme stars as Christopher Dubois, the head honcho of a troupe of orphaned street urchins who steal money from gangsters just to survive. Dubois and the children barely survive when the gangsters and the police find out about them, and he is forced to stowaway on a cargo vessel. Revealed to be a gang of pirates and gun smugglers, the crew imprisons Dubois and deems him expendable. However, a flotilla led by Lord Edgar Dobbs (Moore), a former English naval officer who plies his trade for unsavory types, arrives in the nick of time and saves Dubois from a fate worse than death. Noticing the prowess with which Dubois seamlessly fought his own captors during the battle, Dobbs has him placed under the care of a legendary Muay Thai trainer. It is under that man's tutelage that Dubois learns how to fight effectively. When Dobbs sees Dubois dispatch an opponent six months later, Dobbs makes him an offer to represent the United States in a fighting tournament in the lost city of Tibet. Dubois wants the pride that comes with victory, whereas Dobbs wants the Golden Dragon for himself. The two are joined by reporter Carrie Newton (Gunn) and heavyweight boxing champion Maxie Devine (Remar), although they find that they're far from alone; the party butts heads with a Mongolian-born bruiser who looks to be the odds-on favorite to win the tournament. After a trek that's filled with both fun and fright, Dubois prepares himself for a contest that will push him well beyond the limits of human endurance and skill.
