The Street Fighter, starring renowned Japanese martial artist and actor Shinichi (Sonny) Chiba, was the first movie to ever receive an X rating in the United States solely due to the amount and graphic nature of violence in the film. It had to have 16 minutes edited from the film to achieve an R rating and be suitable for release and public watching, but the edited scenes were later re-dubbed and reworked back into later released editions of the movie. The main reason for the initial X rating, were two particularly over the top violent scenes. Nevertheless, it was not only a cult classic, but it also launched Sonny Chiba into the stratosphere of martial arts icons. This film was also one of the first commercially successful movies released by the distribution company New Line Cinema, who have been huge players in action and martial arts films since.
