During WWII, in a sleepy Southern town, lawyer Temple Rayburn has a promising practice, an adoring wife, and a precocious daughter. Everything seems right when Temple is urged to run for the State Senate. But as Temple soon discovers, the quid pro quo nature of politics will put his moral fiber to the test. On her deathbed, the family's African-American maid Rosetta extracts a promise from them to take care of her mentally challenged son, Ben. Much to the chagrin of provincial neighbors, they oblige and take Ben in to live with them. This act of liberal charity sets off a chain of events that will change the town forever.
