The film is centered around a group of villagers who are experiencing the effects of a pest which has decimated their crops. The villagers are living in a state of continuous despondency, and alternate between moments of this and bouts of extreme anger at their fate. One of the villagers notices smoke coming from a lone shack near the river, and gathers a few of the farmers to investigate. They see a woman hanging laundry by herself and skinning a rabbit. The men work themselves into a frenzy, stating that the woman must be a witch who has brought pestilence.
