Beaches is a story about love and friendship. The story follows the life long friendship between two characters. C.C., who is played by Bette Midler, is a precocious child looking to make it big in the movies. Hillary, played by Barbara Hershey, is a more subdued child who comes from a rich family. The unlikely pair meet on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City when they are kids. They quickly become friends and vow to stay in touch even when Hillary leaves. The movie moves through the years showing the letters the two exchange which reflect the good times and the bad the two go through as they move into adulthood. As adults, they have opportunities to come together to spend time with each other. On one occasion Hilary visits C.C. In New York where she is performing in a local night club. This visit creates an unpleasant situation for the friends when they both fall in love with the same man. The problem resolves itself when the man states he does not have genuine feelings for either of them. As C.C. Begins to climb the ladder to stardom, Hillary believes she is becoming more superficial. The two end up having a big argument which causes them to dissolve their friendship. After some time passes, the two resolve their issues and become friends again. They seem drawn together by their lack of trust in other people. Throughout their lives, the only people they have ever really come to rely on are each other. The story shows the trials and tribulations friends go through as different events take place in their lives. It also shows how powerful the bond of friendship is when two people really love and care for each other. The story has a tragic ending which actually pays tribute to the lasting friendship these two unlikely characters held onto throughout the the course of their lives.
