The Other Sister was a major motion picture released in 1999. Juliette Lewis plays Carla Tate, a mildly mentally retarded young woman. Carla has just graduated from her boarding school and has returned home to stay with her parents. Her mother Elizabeth, played by Diane Keaton, is very protective and controlling of her daughter. Her father is played by Tom Skerritt. Carla is tired of being sheltered and wants to be treated like the young woman that she is becoming. Carla decides that she wants to go to a special trade school and enrolls hoping to become more independent. Carla meets another mentally challenged student at her new school. His name is Daniel McMann but he prefers to be called Danny. Danny is played by Giovanni Ribisi. Danny lives a life very different from Carla. Where Carla is very sheltered and taken care of, Danny lives on his own and is completely self sufficient. Carla convinces her parents that she too can live on her own like Danny. Carla moves into her own small apartment with the reluctant help of her parents. Danny and Carla soon embark and a sweet and tender romantic relationship. This relationship results in their first sexual experience together. Things seem to be going terrific for both of them and then Danny experiences a personal blow. Danny's rich father cuts him off financially from the little money he assisted him with. Danny is devastated and doesn't know what to do. He goes to a Christmas party and being upset and nervous he drinks a bit too much and ends up giving a toast to Carla declaring his feelings for her while accidentally divulging their sexual relationship in front of her entire family. Carla is devastated. They break up because of this but Danny crashes Carla's sister's wedding to propose to her. She realizes that she loves him and says yes even though her mother isn't happy.
