Featuring the talents of Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek, ‘Crimes of the Heart’ is a film that focuses on the lives and relationship of three Southern women who are sisters. Lenny (Keaton) is the oldest, Meg (Lange) the middle sister and Rebecca or ‘Babe’ (Spacek) is the youngest. The three come together to celebrate Lenny’s birthday as well as to deal with the Babe’s legal issue. As young girls the trio lived with their grandparents after their mother’s suicide. Meg, an aspiring singer/actress, left for the bright lights and big city to pursue her goal. Babe married a wealthy Southern senator while Lenny shouldered the responsibility of their grandfather’s care after their grandmother’s death. Babe, no longer able to cope with her husband, shoots him but is released on bond as she only wounded him. As the movie progresses the women reminisce on their upbringing and how the events they witnessed affected each of them, all the while trying to fathom the reason behind Babe’s actions against her husband. Combine this with Lenny’s shy and timid nature and Meg’s despondency over her career and all sort of revelations begin coming out. Through their revelations the three begin finding their own voices. Lenny finally stands up to her bossy, overbearing cousin; Chick (Tess Harper), while Meg comes to terms with her career and the love she left behind year ago. Babe’s motivation for her husband’s shooting is revealed as she confesses her love for a young African American boy who shows her the time and attention she doesn’t receive due to her husband’s neglect. As each sister discovers her true personality, that has been hidden beneath a layer of gentility, they come to grow closer together in their love for each other as they also come to further understand what may have motivated their mother to take her life.
