Places in the Heart takes place in a small Texas town during the Depression era. Sally Field plays a widow who owns a cotton farm. Her late husband, Sheriff Spalding, was accidentally killed by a young black boy during a time of segregation in Texas. This accident cost the young boy his life, as he was dragged behind a truck in front of the community. Edna Spalding recruits the help of a black farmhand and a blind white man, Will, to help tend to her crops in hopes of saving her farm. Will helps Mrs. Spalding get even more hired hands, which she pays in food because there is no money. The group tries to get the first harvested bale of cotton, which comes with a big prize of $100. With a victory, this farm can live on but if not, the Spalding family farm is questionable in its future.
