J.C. Wiatt works as a management consultant for a large Manhattan corporation. She has a live-in lover, an investment banker. J.C. is content with her life, until one day she receives unpleasant news. Her cousin died in an accident. J.C. is left an inheritance, which she thinks is probably money. Mrs. Atwood of health and Social Security meets J.C.at the airport. She tells J.C. she inherited Elizabeth. J.C. tells her she can't have a baby because she has a 12:30 lunch meeting. The lady leaves Elizabeth with J.C. anyway and walks away. Eventually, J.C. sees her life priorities and her life start to change, including her boyfriend who walks out on her because he doesn't like children. J.C. begins to live life for the needs of Elizabeth. With her boyfriend gone, and Elizabeth there, J.C decides to move to the country. She quits her job. They move into an old house that needs a lot of repairs.
