Because I Said So is a romantic comedy that centers around a single mother who is nervously approaching her sixtieth birthday and her three adult daughters. Diane Keaton plays Daphne Wilder, the girls entirely overbearing and meddling mother. Daphne's daughers are Milly Wilder, played by Mandy Moore, Maggie Wilder-Decker , played by Lauren Graham and Mae Wilder, played by Piper Perabo. Maggie and Mae are her oldest daughters and both of them are happily married. Milly is far from happily married. She has just had a recent break-up with her boyfriend. This naturally makes Millie the target of her mother's meddling ways. Thinking that her daughter needs her help, Daphne places a personal ad for Millie without her knowing anything about it. Daphne meets with Jason, played by Tom Everett Scott, and sets him up with her daughter through an orchestrated chance meeting since she doesn't want Millie knowing about her schemes. Millie likes Jason well enough until she meets Johnny, played by Gabriel Macht, all on her own. Johnny is more than meets the eye. An adventurous guitarist and sensitive single father as well. Now Millie is confused. She likes both men and doesn't know who to choose. She embarks on a secret relationship with both of them. Each man is entirely unaware of the other. Millie finds out about her mother and Jason scheming together and breaks up with him. To complicate things further, Daphne has fallen for Johnny's father Joe, played by Stephen Collins. They met and fell for each other by chance when Joe stops by Millie's place because he is locked out of Johnny's. Johnny and Millie aren't there and sparks fly between Daphne and Joe in no time. Now their parents are seeing each other but Millie and Johnny become estranged from the mess that came from Millie's other relationship.
