This biographical film follows the life and career of country music legend Patsy Cline. It traces her rise from a small-town singer to superstar by following the path she took as she rises, gains fame, and becomes a music legend. The film is not a panoramic look at Cline and does not include her childhood. Instead, it concentrates on her tumultuous marriages and her path to stardom beginning in the honky tonks of Virginia and West Virginia. The time period of the film is roughly the mid 1950s through the mid 1960s, and viewers watch her evolve from small-town singer, to devoted wife, to beloved celebrity. Sweet Dreams is really a character study of Cline's growth, as it focuses on a particular time of her life. When the movie begins, she is the devoted, somewhat clinging, wife of her second husband Charlie. What the film does is chronicle her victories and defeats as she slowly becomes more independent, makes new friends, and learns to accept her singing success.
