Trishna (Freida Pinto) is a poor country girl who is living at home and unable to afford some of the basic things in life. Every so often she goes into the city and helps out at the hotel, serving drinks and entertaining the guests. On this particular occasion, Trishna bumps into Jay (Riz Ahmed). Jay is the son of a wealthy hotel owner and is traveling with friends who are visiting from outside the country. He is immediately smitten by Trishna and strikes up a conversation with her, they follow Trishna as she is attempting to walk back to her home, and offer her and her friend a ride. Every morning Trishna wakes her father at the crack of dawn to go to work. She prepares a meal and then the two of them set out in his truck. They make several stops where they pick up a variety of items to be dropped off at a designated stop. On this particular day, her dad is tired from a lack of sleep and has a hard time staying awake. After a few stops, both Trishna and her dad are drifting off from exhaustion, when they run into an oncoming vehicle and wreck the truck. Trishna is thrown from the truck and her father is seriously injured. Being the only breadwinner and unable to make payments for the vehicle, the family is in trouble, but Jay hears about the accident and stops by to offer his support. He offers Trishna a job at his father's hotel to help her with the financial responsibilities, and ensures that a letter is sent to the family home with an offer of employment. Jay is doing everything in his power to keep her near to him, but there are differences that they both have a problem overcoming. Written and directed by Michael Winterbottom, this drama has a supporting role by Roshan Seth as Mr. Singh.
