In the first episode of A Discovery of Witches, we meet our protagonist, Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch who has spent most of her life trying to deny her magical abilities. She's in Oxford for research purposes and stumbles upon an ancient manuscript that is said to hold the key to the origins of witches, vampires, and daemons. Although she's hesitant to even touch the book, she feels an unexplainable pull towards it and decides to investigate further.
Diana's discovery causes a stir in the supernatural world, and soon enough, a vampire named Matthew Clairmont enters the picture. Diana is initially wary of Matthew, especially since vampires and witches are traditionally enemies, but she can't help but be drawn to him. He's a scientist and geneticist, and he's just as interested in the manuscript as Diana is. Together, they try to unravel the secrets the manuscript holds while dealing with the backlash that comes with their forbidden romance.
As the episode progresses, we see hints of the rivalry between witches and vampires, as well as the existence of daemons and the way they interact with humans. Diana also has to confront her own doubts about her magical abilities and whether or not she's willing to embrace them fully in order to protect herself and others. Overall, Episode 1 sets the stage for what promises to be an epic tale of love, power, and mystery, with plenty of supernatural elements thrown in for good measure.
