Chickens, aired on Sky 1 from 2011 to 2013, is a comedy series about three friends - George, Bert, and Cecil - who are deemed cowards for not joining the British Army during World War I. While the show takes a lighthearted approach towards war, it delves into the poignant story of these unpopular men trying to survive in a community that holds them with contempt.

The show is set in 1914, in the sleepy village of Rittle-on-Sea in Sussex. George, Bert, and Cecil (played by Joe Thomas, Johnny Sweet, and Simon Bird respectively) are three young men who are determined to avoid war at all costs. While George is a pacifist who is biding his time until the war ends, Bert is a conscientious objector who is trying to do his part without picking up arms. Cecil, on the other hand, is a bit of a schemer who is always looking for ways to capitalize on the war.

The trio's escapades are the central focus of the show. George, the main protagonist, is a mild-mannered history teacher who is often ridiculed for his cowardice. He is constantly seeking ways to prove his worth, but his efforts are often sabotaged by Bert and Cecil, who are both convinced that their friend's priorities are misplaced. Bert, played superbly by Sweet, is a socialist who is vehemently against war. His activism often lands him in trouble, but his sincerity and compassion make him a popular figure in the community. Finally, Cecil is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur who is always trying to make a quick buck. He is the most unscrupulous of the trio and is rarely seen without an ulterior motive.

The show's portrayal of women is also noteworthy. Mrs. Lavender (Vicki Pepperdine) is the local gossip who takes every opportunity to badmouth the "chickens" - the trio - and convince their girlfriends that they should be with "real men" who are fighting in the war. Grace, George's love interest (played by Sarah Daykin), is a strong-willed woman who is not afraid to stand up to the village bullies. She is the only one who seems to understand George's predicament and supports him when he is at his lowest.

The show's humour is dry and witty, and the gags are often delivered through deadpan dialogue. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the show's pacing is just right. The sets and costumes are excellent, and the attention to detail makes the show a feast for the eyes.

What makes Chickens stand out is its treatment of the war theme. While other shows and movies glorify war and lionize the heroes who fought in it, Chickens takes a different approach. It emphasizes the fact that there were many people who did not want to fight but were forced to do so by societal pressure. The show's portrayal of the "chickens" as sympathetic characters who are trying their best to live their lives while avoiding the war is both refreshing and thought-provoking.

In conclusion, Chickens is a well-written, well-acted comedy series that is both entertaining and poignant. Its treatment of the war theme sets it apart from other shows, and its witty dialogue and likeable characters make it a must-watch for fans of British comedy.
