In American Horror Stories season 1 episode 1, titled "Rubber (WO)MAN," the audience is transported to the haunted house from season 1 of American Horror Story. The Harmon family has already moved out, and a new family, the family of two moms and their daughter, have moved in. The first episode of the anthology series introduces a new storyline set in the same iconic haunted house with a new cast of characters.
The episode initially focuses on a teenager named Scarlett, who is desperate to lose her virginity. Her two moms, Maya and Shanti, have brought her and her friend Ruby to the Murder House in the hopes of scaring the girls into a more responsible state of mind. They recount the story of the infamous "Rubber Man" to the girls, telling them that he wore a latex suit and would appear to women in the house. Shortly after their arrival, Scarlett spots the Rubber Man outside of the house, which piques her curiosity. After her friend Ruby leaves, Scarlett sneaks back into the Murder House by herself.
Inside the house, Scarlett has a chance encounter with the former owner, Constance Langdon, who is now a ghost. Constance warns Scarlett of the dangers of the house but then vanishes, leaving Scarlett alone to explore. It's not long before the Rubber Man appears again, enticing Scarlett into sexual acts. As Scarlett becomes increasingly absorbed in her illicit encounter, the audience is left to wonder if the Rubber Man is what he appears to be or if he's something far more sinister.
Meanwhile, Maya and Shanti are outside of the house, waiting to pick up their daughter and her friend. They notice a group of teenagers who are also hanging around the house and become increasingly concerned for their daughter's safety. When they attempt to intervene, they are met with hostility from the unruly teenagers. Maya and Shanti's fears for their daughter's safety are compounded when they hear their daughter's screams coming from inside the house.
The episode's climax involves Scarlett's frantic attempt to escape the Rubber Man's grasp while Maya and Shanti try to save their daughter from the house's evil. The episode's final scene leaves the audience questioning what they've just witnessed and sets up the rest of the season's themes and motifs.
"Rubber (WO)MAN" skillfully blends horror and social commentary, highlighting the dangers of teenage sexuality and the complexity of relationships between parents and their children. The episode amplifies the great American horror story's unsettling nature while managing to create a unique and engaging narrative that stands on its own. The series' cast and crew successfully establish the iconic Murder House setting in a new storyline that will leave old fans satisfied and new fans desperate for more.
