Set in the ancient times of the Tang Dynasty, An Oriental Odyssey tells the tale of a young woman named Qiwei who dreams of becoming a renowned chef. As she travels through the forest, she encounters a group of men who are chasing a thief and are in need of help. Qiwei helps the men and in return is offered a ride to the city.

The head chef, however, turns her down, stating that the palace only hires men as chefs.

Disappointed, Qiwei sets out to find work elsewhere in the city. Her search leads her to a small restaurant, run by a kind man named Fu Bo. He offers her a job and she begins working as an assistant in his restaurant. Qiwei is thrilled to finally be working in a kitchen, and despite the initial challenges, she proves herself to be a quick learner.

Meanwhile, a young man named Situ Feng is also introduced in the first episode. He is a skilled martial artist who is on a mission to retrieve a treasure that was stolen from his family. The treasure is said to be hidden somewhere in the city and Situ Feng is determined to find it.

As the story progresses, we see Situ Feng and Qiwei cross paths and become acquainted with each other. They both have their own secrets that they are guarding, but as they spend more time together, they begin to develop a friendship. Qiwei is fascinated by Situ Feng's martial arts skills, and he is impressed by her cooking ability.
