Betty en NY season 1 episode 2, "El Trago Amargo," follows the continued journey of Betty (played by Elyfer Torres), a young and highly qualified woman who is consistently rejected by various companies for her appearance. In this episode, Betty is welcomed to V&M Fashion but faces hostility from her co-workers who deem her unworthy of the job.

Feeling out of place and judged by her appearance, Betty's fear of being exposed as an impostor heightens. V&M Fashion co-workers Marcela Valencia (Sabela Valdés) and Sofia Reyes (Amaranta Ruiz) take matters into their own hands and set up Betty on a date with Armando (Erick Elías), the CEO's son. However, the date quickly turns sour as Armando insults Betty's physical appearance, causing her to realize the cruelty that comes with being judged by her looks.

Frustrated with the expectations placed on her due to her appearance, Betty seeks refuge at a nearby bar where she meets a fellow outsider named Rico (Salvador Pérez). Rico is able to offer Betty some much-needed advice and perspective on how to handle being the underdog in a world which values appearance over performance. Betty leaves the bar empowered, ready to face her co-workers with new-found confidence.

Meanwhile, Armando has some family troubles of his own as his sister Marcela and his father Ricardo (Saúl Lisazo) clash over the company's direction. It becomes clear that Ricardo does not believe in the company's rapid expansion and wishes to maintain a more traditional and less risky approach to business. This puts him in direct conflict with Armando, who believes that V&M Fashion needs to modernize and expand its product offerings to maintain relevance in the industry.

As Betty adjusts to her new job and personal life, she learns that she will face new obstacles every day as she navigates life as an underdog in the fashion industry. "El Trago Amargo" highlights the struggles that Betty faces with her physical appearance, but also showcases her strength and resilience in the face of adversity. The episode ends on a hopeful note, as Betty begins to understand that her worth is defined by what she brings to the table, not by her appearance.
